Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and the colour is its aged surface: a muted gold with brown running through it. As a paint or fabric colour it brings warmth without the glare of new metal. More often it arrives as the metal itself, on lamps, handles, picture lights and taps, where a little goes a long way. It lifts dark walnut, deep green and navy, and it sits easily beside ochre and mustard. Brushed and matt finishes look calmer than polished ones, and they age more gracefully.
