One structured piece and one fluid piece. That is the whole outfit, and it is why it holds the eye. The top is rust satin, folded across one shoulder and cut to a short peplum. The trousers are midnight, high in the waist and wide enough to move like a skirt.

Why the proportion works

A fitted, shaped top marks the waist. A wide leg falls straight from it to the floor. The eye reads one long vertical line from waist to hem, so the legs look longer than they are.

The balance only holds if one half stays quiet. Here the top carries the shape and the colour; the trousers carry the movement. Put a full sleeve or a printed fabric on top and the two halves start to compete.

Let one half hold the shape and the other half move.

Midnight instead of black

Midnight is a navy so deep it reads as black indoors. In daylight it shows its blue, which makes it softer than black against skin and warmer against concrete.

It also makes a better partner for rust. Black next to rust looks hard-edged. Midnight sits between the two: cool enough to calm the rust, dark enough to anchor it.

How to wear it

  • Hem the trousers for the shoe you'll wear most. A wide leg should graze the top of the foot in that shoe, with the hem just clearing the floor.
  • Keep the top short or tucked. A peplum, a cropped cut or a full tuck keeps the waist visible. Anything that covers the hip shortens the line.
  • Pick one statement. A sculptural neckline here, or a bold earring, or a strong colour. The outfit above uses all three only because each sits in a different place.
  • Choose a fabric that drops. Crepe, satin-backed crepe or a heavy viscose falls and swings. Stiff cotton holds its own shape and fights the line.
  • Let the shoe disappear. A thin metallic sandal reads as an extension of the leg. A chunky shoe breaks it.

The same formula works in other colours: ink trousers with an ochre top, chocolate with dusty pink, olive with cream. Keep the trousers darker and plainer than the top, and the proportion does the rest.
