Walnut is the deep, slightly cool brown of the timber, with less red in it than mahogany. It is one of the easiest dark colours to live with because it reads as material first and colour second. Shelving, a dining table or a single panelled wall in walnut gives a room weight without closing it in. It also separates strong colours from each other, which is why it sits so well between oxblood walls and a red rug. Pair it with brass, bone and bouclé for warmth, or deep green for calm.
