Stone is a warm grey-beige, the colour of limestone, sandstone and dry plaster. It is a neutral with substance: darker than bone, lighter than camel, and quietly weighty on walls and floors. It suits rooms with plenty of texture, where it lets linen, wood and wool show their grain. Use it with deep greens, smoke grey and marigold, or with rust and black for something more graphic. In warm light it leans beige. In cool northern light it moves towards grey, which is worth checking before you commit.
