Mahogany takes its name from the tropical hardwood long used for fine furniture, and the colour carries the same polished red-brown. It is warmer than walnut and redder than chocolate, so it reads as rich rather than heavy. A single tone can run across a whole room when the textures change: matt paint, leather, lacquer, wool. Brass fittings and amber light bring out the red. Keep at least one pale surface, such as a sofa, a rug or a large print, so the depth has something to sit against.
