Oxblood is a red deepened with brown until it reads almost like leather. It is the colour of old book bindings, polished shoes and lacquered doors, and it holds its warmth even in low light. On walls it works best in a matt or velvet finish, where the surface softens the depth. Warm bulbs keep the red alive; cool white light turns it brown and tired. Pair it with cream, walnut and brass, and give the room one large pale surface so the eye has somewhere to rest.
