Cobalt is a strong, clear blue, named after the pigment that has coloured glass and ceramics for centuries. It is brighter than navy and deeper than royal blue, and it holds its saturation in both daylight and lamplight. In a room it works best in measured amounts: a painted door, a tiled splashback, a glass vase on a sill. Beside amber and violet it turns jewel-like, the way stained glass does. Bone and white keep it crisp, while walnut and brass bring warmth to it.
